We value applicational Bible study
Jesus Christ said that “man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4), and the early church was “continually devoting themselves to the apostle’s teaching…” (Acts 2:42). We’re taught that “all Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
Our dream is that all CBC members would be “firmly rooted and built up in Him and established in your faith…that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception…” (Colossians 2:7-8), and that through “practice (obedience to the Scriptures) have their senses trained to discern good and evil” (Hebrews 5;14), and that our faith would be accurately and effectively “entrusted” to future generations (2 Timothy 2:2).
Therefore, the people of CBC will study and teach the Scriptures in the following ways:
- We will “teach what is in accord with sound doctrine” (Titus 2:1) and remember that the church is “the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15) and that we must “guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called ‘knowledge’—which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith” (1 Timothy 6:20-21).
- We will remember that “the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith…” avoiding “fruitless discussion” (1 Timothy 1:5-6) and remembering that some issues are matters of personal conviction or “opinion” (Romans 14:1).
- We will study individually like a “workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). Note: Our full doctrinal statement reflects our understanding of “the word of truth”.
- We will strive to be “doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves” (James 1:22).
- We will “preach the Word” in corporate settings, primarily expositionally, (verse by verse, chapter by chapter) and “be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction” (2 Timothy 4:2).
- We will teach in Community Groups, children’s and youth ministries, and other small group settings.
- We will lead all new members through the First Principles series of studies developed by BILD International in order to firmly establish them in the faith.
- We will consistently train leaders through a leadership development ministry and the Antioch School of Leadership Development.
- We will offer teaching through our website.
- The leadership of CBC will “devote ourselves to…the ministry of the Word” (Acts 6:4).
